Hampton
Small Boats Head
With continuing good rowing weather Hampton Small Boats Head took place on the Sunbury to Molesey reach of the Thames over a 3 Km downstream course last Saturday. With a top quality entry Hampton always proves to be a testing event. The boys’ double of Ryan Davies and David Read duly won the J17 division and finished 3rd overall out of 408 finishers, the coxless pair of Michael Bennett and Hugo Wiseman finished 4th in their J17 Division and Simon Thompson also finished 4th in the J18 singles division. These excellent results followed on from the recent GB Junior Trials held at Boston in Lincolnshire where Ryan Davies finished 2nd and David Read 5th. These placings qualified both to be invited to the GB World Potential Training Camp in Switzerland in the week before Christmas. Henley Rowing Clubs Junior girls’ squad competed at Hampton Small Boats Head last Saturday. This event is one of the top junior events in the country and attracted a quality entry of over 400 crews and strong entries in every category. With a strong following wind and a full stream from the recent rains the conditions for the 3000 metre downstream course where good and allowed for some fast times. The day was very successful for the girls’ squad with one outright win, four second places and three third places. The outright win came from Kaye Davies in the under 15 single sculls who sculled well to win a comfortable 11 seconds ahead of her nearest rival from LEH. Gemma Mcintosh picked up a silver medal in the 25 strong under 16 single sculls. In some ways this was a little disappointing as Gemma was beaten by Becka Bligh of LEH who at the recent GB Junior Trials in Boston Gemma had beaten comfortably. Gemma also picked up a second place in the WJ 17 double sculls where she was partnered with Louisa Pickworth and where they where just beaten to gold (2seconds) by LEH. In third place with a very good scull where the Gilson twins Vicky and Lizzie. In the morning division Louisa had sculled well to finish third in the WJ17 single sculls with a time that showed a good improvement on many of the girls whom she had competed against at the recent GB Junior Trials. A second behind Louisa in. fourth place in this event was Lucy Darke who is showing significant improvement in her sculling this season. Becci Varley and Melanie Gilson finished second in WJ16 double sculls. Yet another close second place came in the WJ15 coxed quads with the crew of Hannah Read, Lucy Lewington, Kaye Davies, Hannah Smith Willis and cox Nicola Johnson missing out by 2 seconds to St Neots. Third place in this event was taken by the relatively inexperienced Henley crew of Becci Griffiths, Natalie Robinson, Amanda Moore, Jemma Johnson and cox Nicola Johnson, this being only the second race for Natalie and Amanda. The girls doing well to beat the first boats from many other clubs.
