Marlow Regatta

This was a busy weekend for Henley Rowing Club with crews competing at three regattas. It was also very successful with eight wins and some very creditable performances against top class opposition.

On Saturday the other major regatta was Marlow Regatta held at the Dorney Lake multi lane course and where many of the competing crews including overseas crews  where using this as a precursor to the forthcoming Henley Royal Regatta. The Junior Girls came away with two wins the under 15 quads where the crew of Gemma Johnson, Kaye Davies, Hannah Read, Rebecca Griffiths and cox Nicola Johnson beat Sir William Borlase in the final by a length and a half. The girls then moved up an age group to under 16 with Kate Osborn Jones taking over as bow steers in the coxless quads. The girls easily beat Marlow Rowing Club in the final with a 24 sec margin over the 1500 metre course.

Henley Junior boys entered two quad scull crews at Marlow Regatta held at Dorney Lake, Eton, last Saturday. The event was the Schools and Junior Quads for under 19s and was a considerably harder event than the Championship Quads held at the National Schools Regatta three weeks ago. The 'A' crew - Rob Friend, David Read, Ryan Davies and Simon Thompson came third in their opening heat, sufficient to qualify them for the semi- final. Unfortunately the 'B' crew, Michael Bennett and Hugo Wiseman in a composite crew with Marlow RC, were unable to match the pace of the other crews in their opening round and were eliminated. The 'A' crew had probably their best race to date in the semi-final snatching the vital third qualifying  place by 0.3 secs in the last 100 metres of the race from Evesham RC who had beaten them at the National Schools. The final was a tough line-up with Henley facing two Australian crews, a GB squad crew, Leander and Windsor Boys. Their fast finish was insufficient to bring them back into contention in the closing stages and they finished 6th, a very satisfactory result overall which should give them confidence in facing the Henley Royal Regatta Qualifying Races today (Friday) for the Fawley Cup
