Wallingford Head

Last Saturday the older girls from the Henley Rowing Clubs Junior squad competed at Wallingford Head of the River. The race is a real test of endurance being held over an upstream course of 4500 metre course from just above Moulsford Railway Bridge to Wallingford Rowing Club. With the heavy rains in the days before the race the stream was particularly strong making for a tougher course than even normal. In a change from their usual sculling events the girls competed in the Women's School eight's event which for some of them was not only the first time in an eight but in a sweep oar boat. The crew of Lucy Pratt, Gemma Mcintosh, Louisa Pickworth, Rachael Dadds Sarah Fellowes, Bethan Thomas, Lucy Darke, Lizzie Gilson and cox Nicola Johnson came over the course at a positive rating of 32 finishing strongly at 36 overtaking a number of crews on the way to a finish in a time of 19minutes 51 sec's, to win the event 13secs clear of their nearest rivals Lady Eleanor Holles School. 12 year old cox Nicola Johnson deserves special mention as she steered an excellent course in her first event in an eight on a course which has some particularly difficult bends to navigate and her steering definitely contributed to the crews winning time.
