Wallingford Sculls

The new rowing season got off to a good start for Henley Rowing Club with five wins at Wallingford Sculls Head of the river race on Saturday. The wins coming from across the Club, the Junior Girls achieving two wins the Junior Boys one and the veterans two. Over 350 crews took part in the 4000metre long race which is split into two divisions the morning division comprising double and single sculls and the afternoon quad and single sculls. Whilst crews in both divisions had to contend with a strong tail wind scullers in the morning session had also to deal with torrential localised rain.

The Junior girl’s wins both came from the quads division in the afternoon. Hannah Smith-Willis, Kaye Davies, Lucy Lewington, Hannah Read and cox Nicola Johnson winning the J15 quads, and Becci Varley, Gemma McIntosh, Melanie Gilson and Hanna Boyd winning the J16 coxless quads despite some erratic steering.

The girls J15 squad had a particularly good day as they also finished second (Hannah Read & Lucy Lewington) and third (Becci Griffiths & Jemma Johnson) in the J15 double sculls. The older J18 girls had a less successful day with the best position of second coming from Rachael Dadds, Lucy Pratt, Fran Compton and Louisa Pickworth in the J18 Quads.

The Veteran men’s wins where achieved by Tim Lincoln in the Vet F/G/H category where he finished nearly a minute clear of his nearest rival, and by Tom Skinner and Ian Guliani in Veteran C doubles.
