Weybridge Silver Sculls

Henley Rowing Clubs junior girls’ squads successful start to the Head season continued with three wins last weekend at Weybridge Silver Sculls.

The race billed as the oldest sculling head also had a record entry with over 250 single scullers taking part and in excess of 100 double sculls. The race takes place over an upstream 3300 metre course, which includes a double “S” bend and three bridges. With the strong stream that was running taking any of these bends wide lost the scullers significant time and a couple of the Henley girls may well have cost themselves a first place by taking the Walton Bridge bend far to wide.

Two wins came from the double sculls events Hanna Boyd and Melanie Gilson winning the J16 event in a time of 16mins 55 sec’s and Hanna Read and Lucy Lewington the J15 in a time of 17:13. Second place in the J15s was also taken by the Henley crew of Amanda Moore and Becci Griffiths, Amanda performing well in what was her first head race.

Lucy Lewington also went on to win the J15 single sculls in a time of 18:08 with Henley scullers Kay Davies and Hannah Read in second and third place.

Louisa Pickworth sculled well in the top junior girls category to finish in second place and was the fastest Henley sculler, though better steering would have significantly improved her time of 17:54, second places also went to Gemma Mcintosh in the girls J16 event and Rachael Dadds in the Women’s Novice Lucy Darke taking third place in this category.
