Henley Town & Visitors Regatta Henley Rowing Clubs junior girls and women’s squad took the honours at last weekends Henley Town and Visitors Regatta achieving four outright wins.
Another junior crew to win was the Senior three coxed four of Katharine Boothroyd, Louisa Pickworth, Clare Ansley Watson, Juliet Hookey and cox Claire Huntington. In their first round heat they beat Vesta and local club Wallingford and in the final dealt another blow to Marlow with a comfortable and controlled row for a two length victory. Jennifer Woods won the heavily subscribed Women’s Senior Two sculls event. In her first round beating Fisher of Worcester by one and half lengths with Bonham of Evesham coming in third. The final was a very good and tightly fought match with the three scullers Woods of Henley, Caroe from Queens Tower and Welling of Wycliffe overlapping for most of the course with Jennifer always just ahead where she stayed to win by half a length from Welling. The fourth win came in the Women’s Senior Three Eight’s the Henley crew being a mixture of Senior women, Caroline Hocking and Junior Girls Lizzie Mann, Carly Ralph, Fran Compton, Louisa Pickworth, Katharine Boothroyd, Clare Ansley Watson, Juliet Hookey and cox for her third win of the day Claire Huntington. The eight was very much a scratch crew having had no training outings and this showed in the first race against Thames where the girls had to pull themselves back from nearly a length down in the middle of the race to win through by half a length. In the final against what looked a very good crew from H.S.B.C. RC the Henley girls got off to a much better start and took early control of the race winning with a margin of one and a half lengths. For most of the girls this is the last race of a very successful season, where subject to confirmation it looks as though they will finish second in the Premier Division of the National Rowing league behind only Thames RC. They will now be off for a well earned break before resuming training at the beginning of September
