Reading Amateur Regatta

Henley Rowing Club crews notched up another five wins last weekend

bringing the Clubs total of wins for the season to nearly 90 and well on

the way to beating last years record achievement of a 107, and

reinforcing the Clubs determination to provide competitive rowing for

all the wins came from the Junior, Veteran and Women members of the

Club.

The juniors had three wins at Reading Regatta, which is run over two

days with a 1500 metre course on the Saturday, and a 1000 metre course

on the Sunday. During the lunch interval on Sunday a sprint regatta over

500 metres is held for the under 13 and under 14 crews. The J13 girls

won this event with the crew of Chantel Cummings, Claire Boyd, Georgie

Dodwell, Natasha De Lange and Maddie Wheal the girls beating crews from

Evesham Rowing Club in both their first round race and final

convincingly making this two wins out of two regattas.

Later on Sunday evening Henley had three crews in three finals one after

the other. The first one down the course was the J15 boys coxed quad of

Matt Jones, Darren Hewitt, Tom Pocock, Nathan Hillyer and cox Alex Hall

who after a disappointing start pulled back a lengths deficit to

overhaul their opposition also from Evesham to go on and win by half a

length.

Second of the finals was the J16 boys Chris Clarke, Drew Ford, Simon

Jones and Peter Wagner in coxless quads. The boys racing a year above

their status quickly established a lead over local rivals Oratory School

which they continued to build on to record an "easily" verdict by the

finish.

The third final and their second of the regatta was the women's senior 2

coxless quad of Juliet Hookey, Caroline Hocking, Kate Pankhurst and

Laura Leondiades who weren't quite able to make it three wins in a row

losing by under a length after a close race with Exeter Rowing Club.

The Veteran members of the Club also added to the Clubs overall total

with two wins at the National Veterans Regatta winning men's veteran F

quads and a composite eight winning the women's veteran C event.
