Thames Valley Park

On Sunday, Henley sent a squad of Juniors to the Thames Valley Park regatta at Reading. With temperatures soaring throughout the day, the biggest problem for all competitors was keeping cool between races, the heat however didn’t prevent the Henley Juniors from winning a total of four events.

The first win of the afternoon was in the Womens Junior 13 Quad Sculls. In their first race Henley A were pushed hard by Maidenhead but in the closing stages pulled away to win by a 1 ½ lengths with Reading in third place. Meanwhile Henley B drew Tideway Scullers and Eton Excelsior in their heat, with Eton fighting hard but unable to hold Henley B who won by a length. The final saw Henley A & B fight it out over the course but the A crew proved to be just strong enough to take the race by a length with Upper Thames coming third.

The wins continued with the Womens Junior coxed fours where Hannah Blair, Natasha Richardson, Jenny Arnold, Emily Derrig and cox Raffie Varley had beaten Bedford High School and Lady Eleanor Holles in their heat going on to meet Kingston Grammar School in the final. Kingston took an early lead but were unable to shake off Henley but with only 50 metres to go Kingston still led by ¼ of a length but Henley rallied and in a thrilling finished crossed the line first, beating Kingston by just two feet.

In the Junior 13 Single Sculls Henley’s George Arnold won his heat decisively beating Royal Docks RC and Monmouth School. In the final G. Edwards of Staines BC quickly took a lead of almost a length but Arnold fought back but was still trailing after 300 metres. In the final 200 metres G.Arnold took complete control and won by over 2 lenghts.

The final win of the day was the Womens Junior 14 Quad scull of Georgi Dodwell, Maddie Wheal, Claire Boyd, Chantel Cummings and cox Sophie Wheal. In their heat they beat St. George’s College and Dame Alice Harpur School. In the final they met Bedford High School and Lady Eleanor Holles and in a close race it was only in the closing stages that Henley exerted their authority and pulled away to win by 1 length over LEH in second and Bedford in third place.
