COUPE DE LA JEUNESSE

The Coupe is contested by 12 European nations and as well as individual medals there are team prizes for both mens and girls events and an overall team prize. Not surprisingly competion is very strong between the British, Italian and French teams who are the major players at the Coupe.

Competing in the Womens Junior Eights Final which formed part of the opening ceremony on the first evening, Jenny Arnold rowing in the number seven seat, helped get the British team off to a good start by coming third and taking the Bronze medal. Great Britain had a strong start and at the 500 metre mark was leading with Italy second and France third. By 1000 metres France had taken the lead with Italy remaining in second position and the Netherlands coming through in third with the British girls slipping to fourth and Austria fifth. At 1500 metres Britain remained in fourth place some 5 seconds behind France with the Netherlands now second and Italy third but in the last 500 metres Great Britain put in a big push significantly closing down the gap on France and The Netherlands and rowing through the Italians to take the Bronze for the British team.

Jenny was also selected for the Women's Pairs event with her partner Jenny Cogger and on Sunday, the third and final day, the Pair achieved another bronze medal for Great Britain. Belgium took the lead from the start with the two Jennys lying second just holding off Italy. By 1000 metres Belgium remained in the lead but Italy had come through and had taken second position with the British girls in the Bronze position which was the order in which the crews ultimately finished with Poland fourth and France fifth. These two results helped Britain gain 81 points coming second in the womens points tally, just 1 point behind Italy who came first with 82 points.

In the overall medal tables for both men and women, Italy not surprisingly on home territory took first place, Britain second with France third.
